A casing layer is what separates a decent harvest from a great one. Applied over a fully colonised bulk substrate, it creates the cool, slightly alkaline microenvironment that triggers pinning in many species — particularly those that struggle to fruit without one. Our Casing Layer Pack is a pre-mixed, ready-to-use blend of peat moss, vermiculite, and calcium carbonate, sized perfectly to cover a standard monotub in a single application.
Peat moss holds moisture and provides the slightly acidic base that the calcium carbonate then neutralises to an ideal near-neutral pH — the sweet spot that encourages aggressive and even pinning. Vermiculite keeps the layer loose and breathable, preventing it from compacting and suffocating the mycelium below.
No measuring, no mixing, no pH testing — just open the pack and apply a 1–2 cm layer directly over your colonised substrate. Lightly mist, replace the lid, and wait for pins.
Highlights:
- Pre-mixed peat moss, vermiculite, and calcium carbonate
- pH-buffered to the optimal range for pinning
- Moisture-retentive but breathable — won't compact over the substrate
- 1 kg pack — covers one standard monotub
- Works with any dung-loving, tropical, or casing-responsive species
⏱ Processing time: 4 working days. Made in batches — does not ship same day.
